Makers of Tasigna Leukemia Drug Lawsuit

Novartis AG makers of Tasigna leukemia drug failed to warn US doctors and patients of the potential to develop atherosclerosis

Friday, June 9, 2017 - Novartis AG, makers of the leukemia drug Tasigna, has been sued by the estate of a California man in March of 2016. The lawsuit claims that the makers of the drug failed to warn US doctors and their patients of the potential for those taking the drug to develop atherosclerosis. According to www.webmd.com, "Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries characterized by the deposition of plaques of fatty material on their inner walls." Atherosclerosis is irreversible. The suit goes on to allege that the company knew of reports that the drug caused the disease since 2011.

Canada's health agency warned Canadian doctors of the drug's potentially deadly side effects in 2013, but the company did nothing to pass that information on to health officials in the United States. The warning stated that due to the atherosclerosis risks associated with Tasigna, patients taking the drug should be closely monitored for indications of arterial disease. In addition to the health warnings, product warning literature was updated with information about the drug's link to atherosclerosis.

As is often the case, the plaintiff was taking another medication without complications and was instructed by his physician to switch to Tasigna and then the symptoms of atherosclerosis began immediately. The original drug the plaintiff was taking was also sold by Novartis. Within a year of switching from one leukemia drug to Tasigna, the plaintiff underwent an angiogram, a standard test for those suffering the symptoms of heart disease. The results of the test indicated that the plaintiff was experiencing total blockage of the right femoral artery. The femoral artery " is the main artery that provides oxygenated blood to the tissues of the leg. It passes through the deep tissues of the femoral (or thigh) region of the leg parallel to the femur. The common femoral artery is the largest artery found in the femoral region of the body." (1) After changing drugs, the plaintiff died soon after of complications from atherosclerosis. Had the link between the deadly side effects of Tasigna and atherosclerosis been known, the plaintiff would have continued on his original medication.

The suit goes on to claim that the company's decision not to warn the hundreds of thousands of Tasigna users in the United States was part of a premeditated marketing strategy of Novartis designed to protect the company's income stream of tens of billions of dollars per year from the sale of the drug and to not tarnish their brand.
