Tasigna Chemotherapy Atherosclerosis-related Side Effects

Cancer patients given Tasigna should be on the lookout for the symptoms of atherosclerosis

One Side Effect of Being Given Tasigna Could Be Amputations

Tasigna is an advanced anti-cancer chemotherapy drug given to patients suffering from myeloid leukemia and may have serious side effects. One such side effect may be atherosclerosis, a condition which affects the arteries ability to carry blood rich in oxygen and other nutrients to the body's extremities such as the arms and legs.

Atherosclerosis can lead to peripheral artery disease (PAD) which is a thickening, narrowing, and hardening of the arteries in the legs due to a build-up of plaque within them. Plaque is a substance made from fat, cholesterol, and calcium. The reduced blood supply may cause necrosis of the toes and feet (turn black) and require amputation. Other consequences of atherosclerosis are suffering a stroke which could lead to paralysis and heart attacks causing sudden death. Heart attack and stroke can occur when a chunk or clot of hardened material breaks away from the inner wall of the blood vessel and travel to a major artery where it could become lodged leading to either the heart or brain respectively.

Because the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels and arteries is a "silent killer," it is important that a Tasigna patient be aware of symptoms that could indicate the disease has reached a more advanced stage or 70% or more blockage. Warning signs are leg pain as a result of even the slightest exertions such as walking or climbing stairs. Aching, numbness or tingling in the thigh or foot when sitting or lying down are also signs that you may have a serious blood abnormality. Advanced signs of full-blown PAD are permanent lesions on the feet and lower legs, loss of hair on the legs, toenail discoloration and thickening, and lack of sexual desire.

Atherosclerosis and the Heart

Warning signs of atherosclerosis that could affect the heart are chest pain, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, dizziness, and nausea. These are warning signs there is a serious lack of blood flowing to the heart and could cause gradual, long-term heart disease or even a sudden heart attack.

Atherosclerosis and the Brain

Atherosclerosis can also have serious side effects on the brain that potentially result in a paralyzing stroke. Those with the disease often experience confusion or periodic amnesia that can be mistaken for Altzheimers Disease as this occurs when a blockage restricts the blood and oxygen that needs to go to the brain to promote normal brain function.

Americans have been dealing with heart disease and atherosclerosis for decades. The highly respected National Institute of Health tells us that atherosclerosis affects approximately 10 million people and is treatable but irreversible. PAD is a silent killer and chances are a PAD sufferer will not even know they have the deadly disease until it is too late. If you are taking Tasigna as a cancer treatment, you should immediately be checked for PAD as it can be diagnosed by contrasting the blood pressure in the arm versus the leg. PAD blockages commonly occur in the major arteries leading to the legs.
