Novartis Fails to Warn About Tasigna Atherosclerosis

Novartis neglected its responsibility to warn the American public that Tasigna may cause atherosclerosis

Friday, September 22, 2017 - In 2016, the estate of a California man filed suit against Novartis AG claiming that the company failed to warn US doctors of the deadly side effects of Tasigna, an anti-cancer drug that allegedly caused the man's death from atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is an irreversible condition best described as the fatty buildup of plaque within the inner walls of the body's major arteries. The suit alleges that Novartis knew as early as the year 2011 that Tasigna was linked to amputation and sudden death in patients taking the drug but failed to warn the American medical community or the cancer patients themselves. Instead, the company chose to step up their marketing of Tasigna with miseducation and misinformation leading doctors to believe that the drug is more effective in treating their cancer patients than the drug in use at the time, Gleevec. For their blatant and callous misrepresentation of the drug's effectiveness, the US Department of Justice fined Novartis record 1.3 billion dollars of which the company settled and paid $300 million. The plaintiff had no history of heart disease prior to taking Tasigna however once he was switched to Tasigna immediately started to suffer the side effects associated with atherosclerosis. The California man died shortly after an angiogram revealed total blockage of the femoral (leg) artery and the arteries behind both knees.

At issue is the company's failure to warn the Americans of the deadly side effects of using Tasigna in such a way as Novartis warned Canadians. Health Canada, the official health agency of Canada issued a warning to the Canadian medical community in 2013 yet no such warning to the neighboring medical community in the United States was forthcoming. As a result, thousands of American cancer patients were advised to switch their medication from Gleevec to Tasigna and many are experiencing the deadly side effects that followed. Canadian cancer doctors were warned that Tasigna was no more effective than other cancer medications yet carried an increased risk to the patient of developing atherosclerosis and peripheral artery disease. When American patients were switched to the more profitable Tasigna from the company's former drug Gleevec, symptoms of atherosclerosis developed immediately and those cancer patients with existing heart or blood abnormalities were placed in grave danger. Doctors now are advised in black box package warning labels to check the heart and blood chemistry of patients prior to being given Tasigna, during Tasigna treatments, and to be closely monitored for signs of atherosclerosis afterward.
