Some Patient Can Cease Taking Tasigna But They May Have Already Developed Atherosclerosis

Just because a patient is cancer-free doesn't mean that his health problems are over

Tuesday, March 12, 2019 - Everyone agrees that Tasigna is extremely effective in checking cancer however scientists are concerned that the risks of developing atherosclerosis may be unacceptably high. A recent symposium of oncologists and others in the field of cancer research, entitled "Treatment-Free Remission and Preventing Cardiotoxicity: The Future of CML Care" expressed concern that Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor (TKI) drugs like Tasigna used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) could carry adverse side effects and negatively affect the long-term quality of life for the patient. Using Tasigna could be simply trading one disease, cancer, for another, atherosclerosis. Two of the negative side effects of Tasigna that were studied were "severe adverse events including pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and pleural effusion and cardiovascular toxicity. Tasigna can be discontinued in patients with a deep molecular response (cancer remission). Tasigna Atherosclerosis lawsuits for amputation, atherosclerosis and peripheral arterial disease represented by top national attorneys offering a free consultation to families and individuals harmed by Tasigna cancer treatment medication.

At the meeting, Javid Moslehi, MD, a cardio-oncologist at Vanderbilt School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, spoke about his experiences in treating the cardiovascular side effects of cancer drugs. The conclusion of his thoughts were in line with what is already known in that CML patients should be pre-screened for a history of or current cardiovascular problems and that cancer patients taking TKI drugs like Tasigna should follow that same regimen of lifestyle as is recommended to patients with heart disease, that being, "take aspirin, watch your blood pressure, and cholesterol, avoid cigarettes, eat low-fat diet, exercise regularly, and get tested regularly for diabetes. Patients taking Tasigna are to undergo electrocardiograms (ECGs) before starting Tasigna treatments in order to establish a baseline to compare further ECG's taken at regular intervals to watch for the development of atherosclerosis. Tasigna patients must undergo EKGs every week during Tasigna treatments as well as monthly thereafter.

A common, yet rarely mentioned aspect of Tasigna's atherosclerosis it the toxicity of the drug and the effect it has on the inner lining of the major arteries that carry blood to and from the heart. Tasigna toxicity causes irritation to the ordinarily smooth lining of the arteries causing the fatty part of the blood to stick to them and quickly accumulate. The first symptoms that alert a patient of the narrowing of the blood's passageways is a feeling of always being tired where sleep doesn't help. The narrowing of the blood's passageway also prevents nutrient and oxygen-rich blood from reaching the smaller capillaries at their furthest distance from the heart, that being the toes and the result is often tissue death that requires amputation. Tasigna drug patients that are elated at "defeating" cancer may not even make the connection between having taken Tasigna and their new cardiovascular problems. Atherosclerosis patients face the possibility of having to under quadruple coronary bypass surgery much the same way that former NBA great Kareem Abdul Jabbar did in April 2015, after first beating cancer by taking Tasigna.
