Studies Reported by Leading Experts Focus on Tasigna Toxicity

No study of Tasigna's effects on a patient's heart health would be complete without checking to see what the world's leading authority on blood had to say

Friday, January 25, 2019 - "Blood" is a weekly medical journal published by the American Society of Hematology, founded by Dr. William Dameshek and can be accessed online at http://www.bloodjournal.org.

At the core of the reasons why Tasigna causes atherosclerosis is the way, the drug destroys the smooth inner lining of the arteries. Tasigna patients such as NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul Jabbar, have reported having to undergo coronary bypass surgery in order to work around the blockages in their coronary artery. The Kareem Jabbar case is noteworthy not only because of his celebrity status but more importantly because of the healthy vegetarian and holistic lifestyle that he has practiced, one that would hardly be suspected of causing a blood or heart abnormality. Kareem has, however, been taking the anti-cancer drug Tasigna for around a decade and many suspect that Tasigna toxicity may have caused the blockages that lead to his heart surgery. A recent study that implicates Tasigna as the cause of atherosclerosis was documented in the online medical journal BloodJournal.com. The study stated by establishing the fact that nilotinib, the generic name for (Tasigna), is increasingly being used by oncologists to treat chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). While acknowledging the more readily know side effects of Tasigna such as pancreatitis and an increase in blood sugars, the study points to the increase in Tasigna patients that are experiencing progressive peripheral occlusive disease (PAOD). In the patients studied 25.5% developed atherosclerosis. 17.6% of the patients studied developed severe atherosclerosis "requiring repeated surgical interventions or amputation, one had a myocardial infarction (a heart attack), and one required coronary bypass surgery. (1) Nilotinib was also found to trigger these maladies in patients that had a prior vascular event. Three of the patients died. The study concluded by suspecting Tasigna as being the cause of atherosclerosis, however, stopped just short of positively implicating the drug due to the short-term nature of the study. The study determined larger and longer tests are warranted and issued a warning to physicians to take a patient's prior vascular or blood abnormality or event into consideration while treating them with nilotinib (Tasigna).

In another study covered by the journal, the publication found that certain anti-cancer drugs classified as tyrosine kinase inhibitors" such as Tasigna, improved certain leukemia patient remission rates however may contribute to other adverse conditions such as "fluid retention, spillage pleural-pericardial effusion, peripheral pulmonary arterial hypertension, heart failure, QT prolongation, coronary artery disease." The study confirmed that Tasigna can cause sudden death from a heart condition called QT prolongation. Excessive QT prolongation is a radically irregular heartbeat that can lead to heart attack and sudden death. The study urged oncologists to create a measurable baseline by administering an electrocardiogram (ECG) on each potential Tasigna patient to compare with other taken at 7-day intervals for the first 30 days after starting taking Tasigna.
