Tasigna a Cancer Drug Treatment

Plaque buildup in the arterial walls is one of the symptoms of atherosclerosis treated by Tasigna

Monday, June 5, 2017 - With approximately $2 billion dollars in sales, Tasigna is one of the world's most widely prescribed cancer treatment drugs in cases of chronic myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow. The leukemia drug has been found to have serious side effects for unsuspecting users. Tasigna has been linked to a cardiovascular disease known as atherosclerosis, a thickening of the arterial walls leading to the heart.

Symptoms of atherosclerosis are an accumulation of plaque in the arterial walls that results in reduced blood flow. Over time, as the plaque builds up the condition only worsens. The more plaque that accumulates in the arteries, the less room there is for blood to flow and the more difficult it is for the heart to work resulting in high blood pressure. In addition, chunks of the built-up plaque can break off and cause a clot and a complete and partial blockage of the artery resulting in heart attack. If the clot is in an artery leading to the brain, the resulting blockage can cause a stroke. In both instances, there is the potential for paralysis and in a high percentage of cases, death. When the arteries in the legs become blocked necrosis (tissue death) and infections can occur that require the amputation of the toes, feet or even leg. Tasigna and has been linked to causing or exacerbating these conditions in patients that have used the drug as a bone marrow cancer treatment.

Swiss drug maker Novartis AG Pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributes Tasigna and has a history of unscrupulous dealings with the medical community. In 2015, the United States Justice Department fined Novartis $3.3 billion dollars as a penalty for the company submitting false claims and using an illegal kickback scheme to promote Tasigna and other drugs to doctors and pharmacists. The government lawsuit claimed that Novartis steered patients to specialty pharmacies that sold their drugs and then paid the pharmacies kickbacks in the form of rebates. In addition to Tasigna, Novartis illegally promoted Exjade, a drug designed to remove iron from the blood of transfusion patients, and Myfortic used to attempt to prevent rejection in kidney transplant patients. These illegal actions of Novartis net the company approximately $50 billion in sales per year and there was no end in sight until people started to successfully sue Novartis in droves claiming that the drug had caused their atherosclerosis. Medical records dating back to 2011 proves with certainty that Novartis not only knew of the risks of atherosclerosis that Tasigna posed to cancer patients but also covered up the findings in order to protect their profit and brand reputation.

US Medical Community Left in the Dark

In April 2013 Novartis issued a health advisory to Canadian health care professionals warning them of the risks of Tasigna patients developing atherosclerosis and advised them to closely monitor patients taking the drug. The manufacturer updated its product warnings for Tasigna to include information on the risk of those taking Tasigna developing atherosclerosis. These warnings were made without regard to U.S. health officials or US patients taking Tasigna who were left in the dark to think that the drug was safe. Novartis settled the US Government's $3.3 billion lawsuit for $390 million.
