Tasigna Atherosclerosis Hidden From Americans

Canadians were warned about Tasigna but Americans were not

Monday, July 30, 2018 - Tasigna has been shown to cause a form of the cardiovascular disease called atherosclerosis, a build-up of the fatty substance "plaque" upon the inner walls of the body's vital arteries leading to the extremities, brain, and heart. Plaque builds up rapidly in Tasigna patients and the resultant lessened blood flow may cause necrosis (tissue death) in the toes and feet, where the only treatment is amputation. Paralysis from strokes and sudden death from heart attacks due to Tasigna atherosclerosis have also been reported to have occurred. When Novartis became aware of the atherosclerosis risks Tasigna presented, above and beyond the litany of adverse effects chemotherapy carries, the company immediately warned Canadian health authorities to alert their medical community. Oncologists in the US, however, were kept in the dark as the atherosclerosis risks of Tasigna were kept hidden in the United States and no such warning as the one made to Canadians ever made its way to Americans.

Tasigna was brought to market to replace Novartis' revolutionary chemotherapy drug Gleevec as the drug's patent was set to expire. Like Gleevec, Tasigna is a kinase (protein) inhibitor used to treat CML, chronic and accelerated Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia. The National CML Society has placed a warning on its website alerting cancer patients contemplating treatment with Tasigna to take a very close look at the drug's adverse side effects.

Tasigna Carries a Black Box Warning

Because of Tasigna's potential to cause an irregular lengthening of one's heartbeat called QT Prolongation, that may result in sudden death, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now requires Novartis to place a Black Boxed Warning on all Tasigna packaging alerting patients of the sudden death risks the drug carries in addition to the other serious risks. Tasigna's black box warning goes on to list other potentially life-threatening consequences of taking the drug including, decreased bone marrow activity that can result in a compromised immune system, painful mouth sores and skin lesions that do not heal, an irregular heartbeat that can in and of itself lead to a heart attack, pancreatitis, liver function abnormalities, and electrolyte imbalances. This is in addition to Tasigna's ordinary chemotherapy side effects of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hair loss and muscle weakness.

If you have been injured or have had a loved one die from atherosclerosis and have taken the drug Tasigna for chemotherapy, you should speak with a Tasigna atherosclerosis attorney to see if you qualify to file a claim against Novartis, maker of Tasigna for failing to warn you of the drug's potentially life-threatening consequences. Novartis AG has a checkered past of fraud and deception when marketing Tasigna. Novartis was recently fined $1 billion by the US Department of Justice when a former employee uncovered and disclosed the company's illegally incentivizing specialty pharmacists to refill Gleevec prescriptions with Tasigna using a variety of illegal cash kickback schemes. Novartis settled with the DOJ for $390 million and was forced to admit they deliberately concealed Tasigna's potentially deadly side effects to prevent generic alternative drug companies from overtaking Gleevec's market monopoly.
