Tasigna Atherosclerosis Ignored by Novartis Celebrity Spokesperson

Tasigna patients could require coronary bypass surgery

Wednesday, October 24, 2018 - NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul Jabbar's fight against cancer using the chemotherapy drug Tasigna is the perfect example of the terrible side effects of the drug. Jabbar was thought of to be virtually cancer-free a few years ago only to develop another even more deadly disease. Tasigna treatments may have caused Jabbar to suffer an atherosclerosis-related condition that required the star athlete to undergo quadruple coronary bypass surgery after Tasigna treatments. Jabbar will be required to continue Tasigna treatments for his entire life and that could also compound his heart disease. According to www.webmd.com, Jabbar was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). CML cancer results when the body's bone marrow produces an abnormal number of white, infection-fighting blood cells including mutated cancer cells. CML initially causes an enlarged spleen where it may be effectively treated, however, left untreated patients are expected to live about 2 1/2 years. Because of the effectiveness in fighting his CML and the disease being in remission, Jabbar has become a spokesperson for Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG, maker of Tasigna.

Doctors first suspected that Jabbar may have developed atherosclerosis when he complained of experiencing extreme tiredness that would not go away after rest. Kareem Jabbar has a reputation for living a healthy lifestyle and diet, not at all similar to the "Tony Soprano" high-stress, high-fat, meat-eater type that typically leads to atherosclerosis and heart disease. The only poison that Jabbar uses is Tasigna anti-cancer chemotherapy drug. Tasigna is to be taken every 12 hours and the patient is advised not to eat for at least two hours prior to taking the drug.

Tasigna is a highly-toxic, anti-cancer drug whose purpose it is to kill cells. Tasigna attempts to discriminate between cancer cells and healthy cells and to leave the good cells unaffected.

Tasigna is tremendously effective in defeating chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), a rare form of cancer. The problem is that Tasigna also causes severe irritation to the inner walls of the body's arteries leading to the extremities, heart, and brain, causing the blood vessels to become rough and fatty material in the blood (plaque) to stick to and accumulate on them. This accumulation usually takes years when it is due to a poor diet, but can occur quickly in Tasigna patients. When plaque sticks to the arteries inner walls it hardens and narrows the passageway so that fewer nutrients reach the extremities of the cells in the toes and feet. Necrosis tissue death can occur where the only treatment is amputation. When a chunk of hardened plaque breaks free from the artery's inner wall it can become lodged in the more narrow vein and lead to a heart attack or stroke. So common is Tasigna atherosclerosis that the company has been forced to print a "black box" warning on Tasigna packages warning consumers of the risk of sudden death from taking the drug. Physicians are also required to pre-screen individuals and perform an electrocardiogram to serve as a baseline to monitor changes in a patient's heart rhythm while taking Tasigna.
