Oncologists May Be Ignoring the Cardiovascular Side Effects of Tasigna

Oncologists are thrilled with Tasigna's cancer-fighting results yet choose to ignore the greater risk of atherosclerosis Tasigna chemotherapy poses

Tuesday, October 16, 2018 - Novartis has recently repackaged Tasigna to include the recent findings that the drug is so effective in treating CML that some patients can stop chemotherapy treatments altogether. Rather then further promoting the anti-cancer drug the company may have opted to instead warn oncologists that their patient may face an elevated risk of developing atherosclerosis, a deadly, irreversible and permanent form of coronary artery disease.

Studies of Tasigna now show that up to one-third of all patients given the drug could face the need to undergo coronary bypass surgery to unclog vital arteries destroyed by Tasigna toxicity. The very real atherosclerosis risks of Tasigna were underscored in a talk given by Surabhi Dangi-Garimella, Ph.D. at the Conferences of the American Society of Hematology, the results of which were published on the AJMC website on December 10, 2017. At the meeting, physicians shared the latest information about the cardiovascular toxicities including atherosclerosis-related side effects of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) one of which is market leader Tasigna.

Ceasing usage of the TKI drugs was urged not so much for its cancer-fighting effectiveness but more for its life-threatening side effects that include "off-target effects, severe adverse events, including pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and pleural effusion, cardiovascular toxicity, contraindication in pregnant women, effects on fertility, and growth alteration in children."

Dr. Javid Moslehi, MD, of Vanderbilt School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennesse spoke at the conference about the cardiovascular toxicities of TKI's. Moslehi's practice involves managing a patient's cancer treatment toxic side effects. He has found that the adverse side effects of Tasigna include "heart failure and coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, atherosclerosis, arrhythmia, and atrial fibrillation." "Dr. Moslehi pointed out that oncologists have mostly ignored the cardiovascular effects due to a lack of education on the subject. The doctor also stressed that cardiovascular testing of patients before, during and after treatments with Tasigna is essential to identifying a developing heart condition and to promote the "the ABCDE steps for heart and vascular wellness."

In spite of the fact that Tasigna is extremely effective in fighting CML, most patients cannot tolerate Tasigna treatments for very long without developing an atherosclerosis-related condition. Post-market Tasigna studies found that one in five Tasigna patients develop atherosclerosis to some degree or another. Atherosclerosis is the roughening of the otherwise smooth inner lining of the arteries causing the blood's fatty component to stick to and accumulate within the artery's inner walls. Atherosclerosis normally takes years to develop from a poor diet but can occur in mere weeks after taking Tasigna. Rapid-onset atherosclerosis causes tissue death in the extremities due to a decreased blood supply. Tasigna atherosclerosis is usually treated with amputation. Heart attack and stroke have also been reported when a chunk of plaque breaks free and becomes lodged in the smaller arteries leading to the brain and heart. The result can be severe paralysis and even instant death. Tasigna atherosclerosis lawsuits against the Swiss drugmaker Novartis are the best means for individual consumers to hold the pharmaceutical giant accountable.
