Novartis Boasts of Tasigna's Effectiveness While Ignoring the Atherosclerosis Side Effects

The old saying "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," applies perfectly to a recent announcement by Novartis, maker of the anti-cancer drug Tasigna

Thursday, September 27, 2018 - Novartis continues to heavily promote the drug's anti-cancer efficacy, all the while ignoring its life-threatening atherosclerosis side effects. Novartis hopes to imply that their drug is more effective than others because certain patients do not have to take it forever.

Novartis has announced that the FDA is permitting the company to include the phrase "Treatment-free Remission" in the drug's label. This is newsworthy in light of the fact that cancer taking other drugs are required to continue taking them for their entire lives Studies indicate that Tasigna may be discontinued in a small number of patients. The treatment-free remission statement may be misleading, however, in that the ability to discontinue taking the drug could be confused with it being more effective in beating cancer in the first place, which it is not. As a matter of fact, Tasigna has been proven to cause sudden death in a number of patients. Tasigna atherosclerosis has caused heart attacks, paralyzing strokes and the need for lower-leg amputations due to tissue necrosis. Tasigna patients also require coronary bypass surgery to remove the atherosclerosis blockages that threaten their very lives. For many, taking Tasigna is merely trading one deadly disease for another.

It is difficult for a cancer patient, ecstatic over the remission of their cancer, to draw the connection between taking Tasigna and developing heart disease. The earliest warning sign of atherosclerosis is an overall feeling of being constantly and unnaturally tired as the body suffers from a lack of oxygen-rich blood. Sleeping does not make the tiredness go away. Patients in cancer remission naturally think that their heart disease is just another problem in their overall deteriorating health due to aging and do not realize that their cancer drug is the cause of their new disease.

Take for example the situation basketball Hall-of-Famer Kareem Abdul Jabbar finds himself in. Mr. Jabbar is the subject of interview after interview in magazines and on television where he sings the praises of Tasigna and how his cancer is in at "microscopic levels." Kareem also literally sings and dances the praises of his new-found health on "Dancing With The Stars. Kareem's enthusiastic endorsements of Tasigna fail to mention that he has also been forced to recently undergo quadruple coronary by-pass open heart surgery as a result of atherosclerosis caused by taking Tasigna.

Novartis certainly will not go out of their way to mention the fact that at one point, Tasigna was required by the FDA to include a black-boxed warning label, one reserved for the most deadly drugs, that in and of themselves can cause serious injuries or death. Tasigna patient now must be pre-screened for indications of heart or blood abnormalities with an electrocardiogram (ECG). Even if there is no pre-existing condition, Tasigna patients must now take an ECG every week during Tasigna treatments and monthly for life thereafter.
